Supervision on sand replenishment in the Wadden Sea

The challenge

For a beach reinforcement project at Wangerooge, on the Wadden Sea, a client needed support in the controlled and efficient processing of 90,000 m³ of sand.
The circumstances were challenging: limited space, changing tides, high winds and a complex installation including a DOP pump, jet pump, booster, frequency controlled winches, spud poles, GPS systems and a variable piping system.
A delayed start immediately put pressure on the schedule.

Our approach

We provided on-site technical supervision throughout the project. Our efforts focused on:

• Adjusting pumps and frequencies for optimal sand concentration
• Directing operators for use of booster, jet pump and DOP
• Analyzing flow, pre-pressure and flow rate
• Advice on pipeline extension and deployment of auxiliary equipment on the beach
• Tuning DGPS settings on the pontoon
• Improve collaboration and communication on board

By being continuously present, we were able to intervene immediately in cases such as incorrect start positions, restricted dredge width or incorrect DGPS display.

The result

• Project largely completed on schedule despite difficult start
• Production quickly brought up to standard
• Depot efficiently utilized
• Grip on production, even in the event of disruptions
• Better collaboration and communication on board
