Deepening waterways for safe navigation
The Process of Dredging
Dredging is the deepening of the bottom of a river, canal or harbor. Imagine more and more sand, mud and debris falling to the bottom. If nothing is done about it, the water will get shallower and shallower, which can cause boats to get stuck, for example.
When dredging, we use a kind of large vacuum cleaner or excavator that works under water. This sucks or shovels away all that sand and mud from the bottom and takes it to another place. Sometimes the sand is put on land to make beaches or islands bigger, for example. This keeps the water deep enough for the boats and keeps everything tidy.
